Cider tasting: Drago Slayer Gold by Mind's eye cider company
James McLarnon and his Dad visited my orchard last year after getting in contact and took away a car full of apples which he has made into cider. He gave me a few bottles of his own cider to taste. Here is a live and honest tasting of 'Dragon Slayer Gold' which has loads of runes and some astonishing art work on the label!

Orchard walk September 2021 shaky video, ends abruptly
Просмотров 4,1 тыс.2 года назад
Hi everyone. As I get a lot of requests for updates, here is one. Apologies in advance for video quality (it gets better but then ends abruptly at about 12.30) but shooting it again isn't an option. Still getting used to my Canon EOS 2000D, which I bought for skin cancer diagnostics work. Julia was too busy doing something else to help, another time. As mentioned, very irregular weather in spri...
Orchard walk June 2021 leopard moth damage
Просмотров 3 тыс.3 года назад
We stopped using crop protection chemicals about 7 years ago, apart from some herbicide to stop grass smothering the trees. On the whole, it has worked out OK (given that we aren't selling fruit so can live with spots and maggots) but recently we have been having more trouble with the leopard moth.

Sorry again about film quality, new SLR camera behaved unpredictably and wind picked up just as we started filming, its this or nothing.

APOLOGIES for poor sound quality and wind noise-first time I had used this Panasonic Lumix camera and had expected better quality, also wind blow up just as we started filming. We have had a lot of requests for content, and for obvious reasons I can't re-make the video, so here it is for better or worse.
Sorry no scion wood this year
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.3 года назад
Sorry, we are just too busy to send out any scion wood this year, it's a big undertaking and I have too much else on, besides which the garage, that I usually use to lay out all the wood, is filled with stuff as we have both adult daughters living with us during Lockdown. Maybe next year. I promised some wood to 2 or 3 folks, they know who they are, if they send me the emails where I said I wou...

At the orchard, I found a large bumble been that had got itself into trouble in a water container. I rescued it, and (caution, spoiler alert) it flew away strongly. This was mainly about testing out my new Canon EOS 200 DSLR camera, but also as I care about bees.
Spring apple blossom

Our daughter Emily has been staying with us this spring, working from home, and made this short film of the orchard showing some work stacking cut hazel and watching the apple blossom develop. Also took a few pics of the night sky. More on orchard.diaries
Perry pear grafting, after care of developing trees
Просмотров 4,8 тыс.4 года назад
Here we trim and tidy several Perry pear trees (variety Blakeney Red) which were grafted over the last couple of years. Some were on Quince A root stock, some on seedling pear (pyrhus communalis) which I bought from a nursery. I'm sorry to say they got neglected due to time limitations and other priorities and some grass grew up them which didn't do any good. Some corrective attention was given...
Pruning some old damson plum trees
Просмотров 15 тыс.4 года назад
Julia pruning a 25 year old damson plum tree (variety Merryweather). Plums should only be pruned during a period of strong new growth, for us that means mid April to early May. This is because of the risk of microbial disease entering pruning wounds. We don;t think wound paint makes much if any difference. We have lost most of our plum trees from boring insects and bacterial plum canker, we won...

As everyone else is uploading 'What I did in my shed/garden/kitchen during the Lockdown' videos, I thought I'd make this, which is basically about the idea that the guitar is a friend for life, including during hard times. Well it is. There are happy and sad memories stored in a guitar, even a new guitar when you use it to play good old old songs. Parts of 31 great songs from my life story, pla...

Corrective pruning of cider apple trees after broken branches
Просмотров 6 тыс.4 года назад
Last year 2 of our cider apples, variety Somerset Redstreak, had extremely heavy crops and branches snapped off under the weight. Here I correctively prune them. Also remove a large broken branch from a 30 year old tree of Tremlett's Bitter.

Adding plants to our new wild life pond
Would have been a great video if we could have seen what you were doing.
They are my great great grandads Apple
Nice to see you back Stephen! Even though I’m across the pond in Maine, USA I really enjoy your content and your straight shooting. I recently moved and put in a small orchard at my new place with heirloom apple varieties. I included Wickson and Grimes Golden apples for cider, both are reported to be good “single variety” cider apples. Well we will see in a few years! Cheers!
Fungicide use required??
Can’t hear you
If you want to see a really cool dance, similar with this, check this out. ruclips.net/video/sImsZJ7cX0o/видео.html
Hearing the English Carry on in conversation casually reminds me of my grandmother from london. Ive just planted stanley and green gage. Greetings from usa
Hi my name is Stephen Hayes as well and I have the same interests as you I have recently planted two Katie apples trees and hoping to make cider from them and graft from them as well all the best from Stephen Hayes
Its great your back on RUclips Steve.
Greatest insperation ever on self-sufficiency.You see , the charter represent cycles for a veriaty of crop. Now the illustrations is the layout of the grounds in proportion to one's own property. You may use that for circulation or rotation.
I know you will hate me guys but this is very sad, I really like Stephen but I like to see him in his orchard minding the trees and growing vegetables, I don't like to see him in a room drinking alcohol and only God knows how much does he drink, when I was watching his videos I was saying to myself: lucky man to have such a beautiful orchard to spend his retirement, I never thought it will end this way, I think what happened was so much apples not much you can do with them, make cider and more cider and ended this way. I am typing and fighting tears
Good day sir,from Pgh Pa
Saw your photo in the YT feed & thought, "What happened to Gary Chynne?" Then realized it was you, sir. Glad to find you hale & hearty. My climate is hot & dry on basalt soil. Quite different from Hampshire. You were part of the reason I now grow Lamb Abbey & Claygate, 2 of my 3 favorite apples (3rd is GoldRush). In hopes of making cider at home someday I have tried a bunch of cider apples & now have American red-juiced: Otterson & Redfield. Cheers!
Glad to here from you I grafted ah planted 500 apple tree years back because of your incredible videos. I got hit by hail twice the first spring and lost most trees and have slowly been building the orchard again. I'm in America. I had put in 70 varieties. Thanks for you past videos and this one.
Good to see ya back buddy! You were the inspiration of my heritage orchard here in the States. Hope we get an update of your orchard!
If I baught a granny smith root stock and then grafted other apple tree scions onto it, can I let the root stock create branches to get granny smith apples or would I only be able to get the apples from the scions I grafted onto the root stock?
All the varieties you sent me years ago are still going strong! I've shared them with friends as well
My goodness! I’m so happy to see you reviewing my cider! What a privilege! I bottled that batch in May 2022, time truly is the best ingredient. I look forward to seeing you again in the near future. All the best. ❤
Enjoyed your videos from Stephen's orchard. Apologies, I was slow to realise it was your cider under review. Well done!
good to see you back again Stephen
So great to see you back Stephen, your dulcet tones were missed
Holy cow! The man is back! I'm an American (with nearly full English bloodline) who started a cider orchard in the last few years. Sadly, I found your channel JUST as you stopped posting videos. Very glad to see you back and looking healthy. Cheers and God bless you!
Welcome back Stephen
Last fall was the first year I pressed cider that included apples I grew myself. Among those were some Dabinette that came from a tree I grafted myself. Your videos set me on that path many years ago. The finished product was excellent. I wish we were on the same side of the Atlantic so I could share. Cheers!
Cheers mate. Forgot about this channel. Used to watch your apple tree pruning videos like 10 years ago
Enjoying the tasting videos. Off to James' channel to see the videos of your orchard.

@@phungpatHi. I posted a couple of direct links which don't seem to have been allowed (apologies to Stephen if he didn't want them in the comments). If you search on James' name you should find the channel.
There is an old familiar face. Glad to see you back on again !
Hello, friend; this is a poor substitute for actually being together enjoying a glass and having a chat. Good to see you and thanks for saying hello with the video.
Great to see you, Stephen! I hope you are well. Your videos are always a welcome sight in my recommendations list.
Really enjoying these tasting videos. I don’t imagine they’re much hardship to make either!
So glad that you're back!
Thank you. Your videos taught me how to prune apple trees. You also inspired me to try grafting.
I love going back through your videos! You explain the reasons behind each of your cuts, taking the mystery out of pruning. I have learned a great deal watching your channel. Thank you!
Great to see you and you're looking well. Like others, you inspired me to grow some heirlooms along with my newer varieties. My Kingston Black, Yarlington Mill and Roxburry Russet trees are producing some fantastic hard ciders!
Wonderful to see you back and have a new video from you! Your orchard videos really inspired me to plant my own cider apple trees a few years ago. Great video and really enjoy the talents of Jimi Hendrix - really love The Wind Cries Mary.
Hi Stephen, please add me to the long list of people who’s orchard was influenced by yours and who can now graft thanks to your videos. Lovely to see you on here and thanks again for sharing your knowledge
Stephen! Great to see you back and looking cooler than ever! Hendrix rocks.
Great to see you back Stephen! Nice surprise to see a new video the day I was grafting May Queen in the orchard your channel and book inspired me to plant here in Downeast Maine
The legend, Mr Stephen Hayes. Miss your orchard musings greatly. Found myself thinking one of your quotes only a few weeks back - I do love the month of April. Hope you get time to post a few videos this year! Keep well.
Hey man! Where ya been?
Very good to see you back on youtube!
Hi to you all, good to see you are doing good. You inspired me to start an Heirloom orchard on the campus of UW-Oshkosh, Wisconsin. We have now all the still exciting apple varieties originating from Wisconsin. It includes the newly rediscovered Ratzburg apple and 22 others. We also do a grafting and scionwood exchange event around earth day. We gave away 150+ heirloom apple trees. Paying it forward!
Interesting. I don't know about leopard moths but we certainly have no woodpeckers here so that is not something we have to worry about! Canker on the other hand is, and has ever been, a major head ache. Your orchard walk reminded me of the Japanese proverb, "The best manure is the gardener's shadow"!
I foresee brewery sponsors and beer sales influencer opportunities on the way 😁
Hey, Stephen, how lovely to see a video from you. Though I don't like beer I love to hear people eulogising about their 'passions'. I still think of you whenever I badly prune my apple trees but, amazingly, after some 10 years my new orchard is full of potential new apples for the very first time! So, Cheers! I still get my scythe out occasionally in my little, Croatian village!
Welcome back Stephen :-) I've still got in my biodynamic orchard your "Ribston Pippin" apple as well as "Orleans Reinette"...I' m very glad of them...Greetings from Italian Riviera !!!
Good to see you Stephen glad you're doing well.
Good to see you again Stephen, I hope you and your family are all well
All time favourite album playing there
We miss you man, great to see you again, Yesterday I was watching your videos then I went out grafting scions on M25, I have more to graft today
Hello good seeing you do an update! Missed the orchard videos! Would be nice for a small update!
